These programs feature women and men in the marine sciences field who speak about their work in a series of presentations and activities. By introducing middle and high school students to professionals working within the science field, participants can start to see themselves in these same roles and understand what skills they will need to develop in order to enter these fields. Each program provides students with ideas on possible career paths, activities designed to simulate aspects of various jobs and highlight opportunities at the New England Aquarium and other local organizations that
can get participants started on the right path.
Women in Science
Program for Middle School Students
Tuesday, April 24
Grades 6 – 8
9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Students will have the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes, how our animals are cared for and, most importantly, see the possibility for a science-based career for themselves. Through hands-on activities lead by our education staff, students can learn what it takes to become anything from a veterinarian, a field researcher, an animal trainer and more. The event also includes breakfast and lunch with Aquarium staff so that participants can have an informal discussion about their careers. Teachers can sign-up groups of up to 10 students for this program.
Program for High School Students
Thursday, May 24
Grades 9 – 12
4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
This free workshop for female high school students runs as part of our Aquarium Lecture Series and provides participants with a unique experience to explore the professional science fields. Prior to the evening lecture, students and teachers spend time working with our featured speaker and Aquarium staff to learn more about what careers exist in the marine field. School groups are encouraged to attend together, but individual students are also welcome. Following the workshop, participants are encouraged to stay for the lecture and hear more about a specific project our speaker is working on. Dinner with workshop staff is included with this program.
Teachers can sign-up groups of up to 10 students for this program. Click here to register.
