Founded in 1969, the New England Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston and a major public education resource. The Aquarium's mission is to present, promote and protect the world of water. The Aquarium is also a leader in global marine conservation, with research scientists working around the globe.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums
In 2006, the New England Aquarium was awarded full accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The AZA is a voluntary organization of zoos and aquariums across the country that strives to raise the professional standards and influence the continuing development of superior institutions. AZA accreditation is granted after rigorous review of animal care, conservation, education and safety programs.
American Association of Museums
The New England Aquarium is fully accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM). AAM's mission is to enhance the value of museums to their communities through leadership, advocacy and service. AAM has been bringing museums together since 1906, helping to develop standards and best practices, gathering and sharing knowledge and providing advocacy on issues of concern to the entire museum community.
