The Akiko Shiraki Dynner Fund for Ocean Exploration and Conservation was created to support the ocean exploration, research and conservation activities of the New England Aquarium. The fund provides essential seed funding to launch Aquarium Global Explorers research expeditions. These efforts, generally lead by Aquarium scientists, promote discovery, changes in policy initiatives and other actions to protect critical ocean habitat and marine life. Expeditions are often undertaken in collaboration with other leading research or conservation organizations such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Conservation International or National Geographic magazine. The fund also supports a variety of other ocean conservation programs, including assistance for marine protected areas.
Since launching in 2005, this fund has supported these important initiatives.
- Tsunami Coral Reef Assessment
- Ocean Health Index Assessment
- Sea of Cortez Expedition
- Phoenix Islands Expedition
- Support to the Phoenix Islands Protected Area
- Raja Ampat Expedition
