| Responsibilities | The New England Aquarium has been researching right whales for over 25 years and curates the north Atlantic right whale (NARW) catalog. The NARW catalog is an extensive photo-id database of the north Atlantic right whale population. The database houses data from as early as 1935 and represents sightings from the US, Canada, Iceland and even Bermuda. The NARW catalog is routinely used by research scientists for studies involving right whale habitat use, temporal and spatial distribution, mortality, reproduction, health assessment and much more. Responsibilities: We have a variety of short to long duration tasks in the right whale office including: Data entry (ongoing task) Scanning of old datasets (medium duration-2-3) Integration of slides into folders (medium duration – month or two) Scanning of right whale scarring composites (short duration – less than a month) Typing in scar coding notes (medium duration – 2-3 months)
However, this position does not include any off-site field work and has no related field time/season associated with it. The position is an office based position working with post season data tasks and long term projects that we ultimately aim to publish. Qualifications: Applicant should be organized and motivated with the ability to work independently and maturely in a professional office environment. The applicant should have a basic knowledge of right whales (history, habitat etc.) and current issues. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access a plus. |
