| Responsibilities | Hermit crabs are among the most charismatic creatures in New England waters. They inhabit gastropod (snail) shells for protection against predation and desiccation, and constantly are on the lookout for new shells. In most populations, high quality housing (shells) are so rare that crabs are stuck inhabiting shells with holes, plastic pen caps, anything they can find! At the New England Aquarium, we focus on researching the behavioral components of shell switching - how do hermit crabs assess shells and each other? How do they know when to switch? How does shell size impact crab reproduction? Growth? Molting? We collect hermit crabs from local populations and manipulate their shell quality in the lab, while observing their behavior. We also introduce novel shells and shell substitutes (plastic, etc) to investigate shell preference. Responsibilities: Daily tasks include feeding, experimental design, data collection, and writing. While experimental animals need to be cared for daily, opportunity exists to become a more active participant in ongoing research and work on scientific publications. *Please submit a cover letter, resume, and transcript in addition to the online application.* |
