Tropical coral reefs represent one of the most biologically diverse habitats on earth, and there is much research and effort dedicated to studying reefs and conservation measures. Though it is not widely studied, there is a hard coral species (closely related to tropical corals) that lives right here in New England! Corals are colonial animals, comprised of polyps. At the New England Aquarium, we are studying various measures of coral health, including their growth patterns and their color.  Using custom software, we are analyzing new polyp growth, polyp death, polyp size, and colony color from photographs.

Responsibilities:  Image analysis of coral photographs to look at coral growth, death, and color parameters. Possible opportunities to work with live corals in a laboratory setting, as well.

Qualifications:  Strong interest in working in a research environment. Must have advanced computer skills and be able to work independently. Prior research experience is extremely helpful; good attention to detail is essential. Basic knowledge of statistics and scientific writing a plus. Bachelor’s degree preferred; will consider college juniors and senior Biology majors with prior research experience.
