Though it is not widely studied, there is a hard coral species (closely related to tropical corals) that lives right here in New England! Corals are colonial animals, comprised of polyps. At the New England Aquarium, we are studying various measures of coral health, including their growth patterns and their color. Using custom software, we are analyzing new polyp growth, polyp death, polyp size, and colony color from photographs.
