June 20, 2009 Morning Trip
Our AM trip today we came across a humpback whale that we have not seen yet this season! The whale is Mostaza who was born back in 2000, and its mother is Salt! Salt is considered the Matriarch here on Stellwagen Bank, first spotted back in the 1970s and still having calves! Mostaza is not named because of a mark on the underside of the tail, this is because Salt's calves receive their names the year of their births instead and are named after something salt like or a condiment. Mostaza is the Spanish word for Mustard.
