August 5, 2009 Morning Trip

On our AM trip we came across Alphorn and Freefall. At first, these whales were just hanging out and going on a few dives. After a few looks we began to pull away to explore the Bank a bit more, but just then, Freefall began tail breaching! We quickly turned around to check this behavior out. Freefall put on quite a show, and then Alphorn joined in! We had both of these whales tail breaching and tail lobbing right next to our boat and right next to each other. It was very interesting behavior to watch, and made for a great morning!

July 31, 2009 Morning Trip

After seeing a few minke whales, we found a couple humpbacks. They were traveling in some pretty large groups; we had three, including Alphorn, on one side of the boat, and five including Fulcrum and her calf on the other! They were going on some pretty deep dives, except the calf who would stay with the boat during the down time!

July 18, 2008 Morning Trip

This morning we came across some heavy fog and a bit of rain, but the whales didn't mind it! And luckily, the rain cleared as we reached the bank. Soon we came across some open mouth feeding! We had both fin whales and humpback whales working at an area of bait; the fins doing great lunges and the humpbacks cooperatively bubble feeding! We were able to identify Alphorn, Pinpoint, and Vulture out of the group feeding together.

We had a beautiful day on the water today! During our morning trip, we saw a bunch of humpbacks! The first whales we found were going on some dives, and we were able to identify Alphorn among the three that were near our boat. We then found a mother and calf pair, and we paused to check them out while three other whales in the distance did some flipper slapping. But the best part of the morning was yet to come: we found a whale named Coral breaching! We got great looks at this whale while it was out of the water. Coral was getting a work out, doing quite a bit of breaching with some flipper slaps and even a full roll!

July 9, 2009 Afternoon Trip

On our afternoon trip we came across several humpbacks! We saw a couple of them swimming by themselves and a couple in pair groups with one on the whales breaking off from one group to join another! We got some great looks at Alphorn traveling with another whale, but then broke off and joined up with Pipette, and Banyan. We then saw a whale doing some flipper slapping a little ways away and went to try and get some looks, but this whale seemed to be a little shy and would stop when we got close. As we kept waiting and hoping the whale would do some more flipper slapping we saw another whale in the distance do a tail breach. Then our flipper slapping whale came up close by and was joined by Pipette, Alphorn, and Banyan. The flipper slapping whale turned out to be a whale named I.T. Such a great afternoon on the water with so many whales!

June 20, 2009 Sunset Trip

Photos by Melissa Rocha

Our Sunset trip tonight was disappointing as far as an actual sunset went, but otherwise was an amazing trip! We saw our 2nd basking shark of the season! Then to top that off had at least 10 most likely 15 different humpback whales all together, including a mother and calf! A group of 4-5 were going on some deep dives for about 3 minutes then would come up to the surface with their mouths just slightly open water straining out. They were most likely doing some deep feeding. Several times when they surfaced they were RIGHT next to us! The calf also was doing a bunch of rolling and flipper slapping. A few of the animals including the calf and an adult did a couple of breaches. Some of the whales we saw were: Mostaza (born in 2000), Cajun (female), Alphorn, Milkweed, Tornado( female), Coral (male), Jabiru, Simian, Apex and her calf, and several others! Such a great night despite the lack of a true sunset!

Photo of Raccoon

What a great day to be on the water!
We had about 8 humpbacks including some very well known individuals! We had Salt! Salt is considered the matriarch of Stellwagen Bank! She was first spotted back in the 1970's and she is still having calves, she had one last year! We also saw Alphorn and Raccoon! If all the humpbacks weren't enough we also got to see about 20 Atlantic white-sided dolphins! Between weather and whales it was a perfect day on the water!
