Behind the Scenes:
Octopus Feeding
Wednesday, June 20, 2018 by Emily Bauernfeind
For these intelligent cephalopods, feeding time is about more than getting food. It’s also time to socialize!
On the menu: clam, shrimp, and some quality interactions.
Freya seemed to know it was feeding time and came right up to the door. Aquarium Intern Skye placed food onto her suckers and the suckers transferred the morsel down her arms toward her mouth in the center of her array of arm. In addition to feeling their surroundings, octopuses taste and smell with their suckers. You can see her “tasting” our intern, who is in charge of regular feedings.
