About the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument

Roughly 130 miles southeast off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument protects three massive undersea canyons that cut through the continental shelf and four underwater seamounts, formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity.

Hundreds of different species live in these protected canyons and seamounts, including dolphins, endangered sperm whales, rare beaked whales, and sea turtles, to name just a few. New creatures are discovered with every deep-sea exploration. It’s simply impossible to overstate the uniqueness of this habitat and its value as the most protected region in the U.S. Atlantic Ocean.

Ever since this marine national monument was designated in 2016, groups that oppose the Monument have been working to weaken its protections. On June 5, 2020, they succeeded in removing crucial protections that prohibit commercial fishing activity in the area.
