Part of the New England Aquarium’s mission is to create ocean advocates through fascinating experiences with marine life. Another way to spark curiosity and learning is through reading and storytelling!

In our new Exploration Station—a quiet space designed for children ages two to seven who may need a moment of calm during their visit—we offer books that families can read together.

Here are some of our favorite ocean- and planet-themed stories, many of which you’ll find on the Exploration Station shelves:

To Change a Planet by Christina Soontornvat and Rahele Jomepour Bell

(Reading level: 4–9 years)
This beautiful picture book is a tribute to our planet. It gently explains climate change and highlights hands-on solutions that empower young readers. We love how it shows that communities can work together to create big change.

We Are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom and Michaela Goade

(Reading level: 3–7 years)
Inspired by the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, this award-winning book honors Indigenous-led movements around the world and calls on children to help safeguard our planet’s water from harm and corruption. At about 40 pages, we recommend it for slightly older readers.

The Eye of the Whale by Jennifer O’Connell

(Reading level: 7–9 years)
Based on a true story, this book recounts the dramatic rescue of a whale from life-threatening entanglement. This is a great introduction to a real threat whale populations face and work by researchers at the Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life to mitigate the risk of entanglement and help rescue entangled whales—just like in the story.

Goodnight River by Isabel Otter and Clara Anganuzzi

(Reading level: Baby–3 years)
This gentle board book introduces freshwater animals through soothing language and charming illustrations, and helps even the youngest readers feel a connection to nature.

My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan and Francesca Sanna

(Reading level: 4–7 years)
Through lyrical text and imaginative illustrations, this book personifies Earth as a friend who cares for all living things. It encourages children to see the interconnectedness of ecosystems and to treat the planet with care.

Jayden’s Impossible Garden by Mélina Mangal and Ken Daley

(Reading level: 4–9 years)
This story follows a young boy who inspires his community to transform an empty lot into a vibrant garden, showing children that they can spark real change and rally others to protect the environment at any age.

A Kid’s Book About Climate Change by Zanagee Artis and Olivia Greenspan

(Reading level: 5–9 years)
This nonfiction book explains climate change in clear, age-appropriate language that empowers children with knowledge. It invites young readers to take action and see themselves as part of the solution.

Baby Loves Green Energy by Ruth Spiro and Ailie Busby

(Reading level: Baby–3 years)
Part of the beloved Baby Loves series, this board book introduces renewable energy in a playful and approachable way. We love how it makes big scientific ideas accessible for the littlest learners.

National Geographic Kids/Discovery Kids series

(Reading level: varies by title)
These leveled readers cover fascinating topics in nature such as coral reefs, frogs, butterflies, and more. The vivid photography and engaging facts make nonfiction appealing to curious young minds.

You may also catch a Storytime pop-up, a new pilot program for toddlers. Once fully launched, Storytime will combine stories, music, and movement, and be offered at scheduled times throughout the week.

Next time you visit the Aquarium, be sure to stop by the Exploration Station for a quiet, family-friendly moment to learn, imagine, and be inspired!
