BOSTON, MASS. (May 22, 2025) – Sharks are key players in the marine ecosystem. In time for Memorial Day Weekend, the New England Aquarium’s Simons Theatre will begin screening Shark Kingdom, an epic family adventure into some of the world’s most scenic and remote shark waters. The film will premiere on the Simons’ giant screen on Saturday, May 24.
The family-friendly film follows shark conservationists Jess Cramp, Liv Rose, and Cristina Zenato as they come face to face with these ancient and awe-inspiring animals, learning how our future is intertwined with theirs.
“Sharks are simultaneously awesome and scary and mysterious, but they’re also very intriguing and often misunderstood,” says filmmaker Matt Tomaszewski. “I hope people will learn to see sharks in a different light and understand that sharks are not simple and primitive, that there’s more to them.”
The film highlights locations such as the Maldives, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, and Lord Howe Island, which have some of the highest concentrations of unique shark species in the world. Each shark species wields unique powers that help them survive in diverse ecosystems, whether it’s a great white hunting in the wild in the wind-swept seas of New Zealand, whale sharks learning to coexist with Australian fishermen, or elusive oceanic white tip “shipwreck sharks” traversing uncharted depths of the Pacific. Filmed in some of the world’s most beautiful diving locations, Shark Kingdom encourages viewers to understand and help these magnificent creatures.
