BOSTON, MASS. (May 21, 2026) – Once driven to near extinction by the maritime fur trade, sea otters have made a remarkable comeback, breathing new life into Vancouver Island’s west coast. The story comes to life in Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure, an immersive documentary adventure that begins screening on the giant screen at the New England Aquarium’s Simons Theatre on Friday, May 22.
Where snowcapped mountains meet rocky shores, the film follows Bella, a first-time otter mom who has only eight months to prepare her pup, Finn, for a life of his own on the rugged coasts of British Columbia. Together they overcome incredible odds amid some of nature’s breathtaking sights. The story plays out in kelp forests that are among the most biodiverse ocean communities on the planet. These dense underwater ecosystems rely on predators like sea otters to keep sea urchin populations in check, giving kelp a chance to recover and thrive.
This new film comes to the New England Aquarium in time for Memorial Day Weekend. Tickets and show times are available by visiting neaq.org or calling 617-973-5206.
Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure was directed by Annabel Robinson, whose credits include Secrets of the Octopus and David Attenborough’s Life in Colour, and produced by Sarah Beard, a veteran of more than 30 years in film and television whose ocean conservation film work includes the award-winning film BLUE and Ocean with David Attenborough.
