Building a Home for Black Excellence in Marine Science with Dr. Tiara Moore
In-person and virtual event continues Aquarium’s 2023 Lecture Series: Thursday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m.
WHAT: In recognition of Black History Month, Dr. Tiara Moore, an environmental ecologist and the Founder and CEO of Black in Marine Science (BIMS), joins the New England Aquarium Lectures Series to share how BIMS strives to celebrate Black marine scientists, spread environmental awareness, and inspire the next generation of scientific thought leaders. Dr. Moore’s current research involves sampling soil for environmental DNA (eDNA) and molecular genetics to assess ecosystem biodiversity as a management practice. She has conducted research on the Chesapeake Bay, Carpinteria Salt Marsh, Upper Newport Bay, and the Ellsworth Forest.
Over the past three years, Dr. Moore has worked to remove barriers that prevent entry and retention in marine science while also celebrating Black marine scientists currently in the field. The BIMS team is now building the BIMS Institute, a research, communication, and innovation powerhouse that is sure to change the face and culture of marine science worldwide.

WHO: Dr. Tiara Moore is the Founder and CEO of Black in Marine Science (BIMS) and the BIMS Program Lead at The Nature Conservancy. Dr. Moore also mentors minority women in the lab and in afterschool programs, and is the Founder of A WOC Space, LLC, where she works to make a safe and inclusive workplace for all women of color (WOC) through WOCShops, personalized trainings, and community outreach. Her work has been featured in the Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, Phys.org, ASLO Bulletin, among others. Dr. Moore received her doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from University of California, Los Angeles, her master’s degree in biology with a concentration in environmental science from Hampton University, and her bachelor’s degree in biology from Winthrop University.
