Lecture on deep-ocean habitats features marine biologist and 2020 National Geographic explorer Diva Amon

Hybrid event is part of the 2022 New England Aquarium Lecture Series

WHAT: The New England Aquarium Lecture Series event welcomes Caribbean marine biologist and 2020 National Geographic Emerging Explorer Diva Amon, who studies the little-known habitats and animals of the deep ocean and how our actions are impacting them. She is co-founder of SpeSeas, a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to appreciate and use our oceans now and in the future. Dr. Amon will discuss her research, which takes her to deep-ocean habitats from Antarctica to the Mariana Trench. Less than 0.05% of Earth’s oceans have been explored, but as our world changes, the blue economy is heralded as a possible solution to increasing demand for resources. Dr. Amon will discuss her research, the Earth’s deep oceans, and why they matter to the future of the planet.

The Aquarium Lecture Series is presented free to the public through the generosity of the Lowell Institute.

WHO: Dr. Diva Amon is a Caribbean marine biologist, 2020 National Geographic Emerging Explorer, and researcher of the weird and wonderful animals in parts of the deep ocean that few, if any, have visited before. She is currently in the new National Geographic and Disney+ series Welcome to Earth. Dr. Amon has spent over a year of her life on expeditions around the world, exploring previously unknown ocean habitats from Antarctica to the Mariana Trench. She regularly ventures down into the depths in submersibles, with her deepest dive to 2.6 kilometers below the ocean surface in the Cayman Trench.
