BOSTON, MASS. (May 18, 2022) – For the first time ever, the New England Aquarium is simultaneously opening three new films, Superpower Dogs, Wings Over Water, and Cephalopods: Aliens of the Deep, at the Simons Theatre, beginning Memorial Day weekend. All three open on Friday, May 27.
Superpower Dogs, narrated by Boston native and well-known “Captain America” actor Chris Evans, takes viewers around the globe to meet the remarkable dogs who save lives and discover the power bond they share with their human partners. The film reveals the incredible abilities of dogs and the science behind their superpowers, from rookie puppy training to avalanche rescue dogs and even a four-year-old Newfoundland capable of rescuing humans in water from boats or helicopters, swimming for miles without tiring and towing up to 40 times her weight in the water.
Wings Over Water, narrated by Michael Keaton, tells the compelling story of three amazing bird species – the Sandhill Crane, the Yellow Warbler, and the Mallard Duck – with extraordinary footage of their fascinating behaviors. As the glaciers retreated at the end of the last Ice Age, they left an astonishing gift of connected rivers, lakes, and wetlands across the heartland of North America. Today, these largely unknown water highways remain an oasis for wildlife, from the herds of bison to the millions of magnificent birds that migrate along these “flyways.”
Shot over three years across the globe through stunning underwater cinematography, Cephalopods: Aliens of the Deep presents an intimate portrait of octopuses, cuttlefish, and squid through macrophotography of the Cephalopods (Greek meaning head foot). Viewers will see the magical world of these fascinating aquatic species and discover their unique physiology and what makes them survive against all odds.
The films will screen in the New England Aquarium’s Simons Theatre on Central Wharf in Boston. Tickets are available for purchase online. Simons Theatre is open seven days a week during Aquarium visitor hours. Summer hours begin May 27: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sundays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Face coverings are encouraged for Aquarium guests though not required on Aquarium property.
